This master class allows students to create ankle boots with new techniques in a short time, with different types of décor. Students will learn how to make a heel box using technologically advanced materials in the production of shoes. 

From renowned fiber artist Natalya Brashovetska, and hosted by Susan McFarland of Susan's Fiber Shop, we invite you to take your fiber artistry to the next level, join us for this 5 day workshop, and learn advanced shoe felting techniques that will last you a lifetime.

Learning Outcomes:

Within this workshop, students will learn:

● how to take measurements and build the template;

● how to use this pattern for the production of various models of boots in the future;

● how to make boots with laces or elastic or zipper and based on this knowledge, they will be able to make other models of shoes. Explanations on this will be given during the class;

● how to make an individual design of leather for felted shoes. Acquire skills in working with leather, learn how to choose the right type, thickness and elasticity of leather to create shoes;

●  the process of tightening leather in the manufacture of shoes, a list of necessary tools;

● how to make heel box and toe box using technologically advanced materials in the production of shoes;

● how to create various models of felted boots based on one pattern;

● master skills of classic shoemaker adapted to felted boots, thus creating felted orthopaedic shoes. This involves creating felted shoes with a good level of foot support, having inner soles and stiff shoe back (heel box).

Time Required: 8 hours/day + 5 days

Your Materials Fee Includes: Shoe lasts (if needed), Innersoles, Soles, Heel Box, Eyelet Pieces or Zippers, Waxed Thread, Nylon Thread, Bergschaf and Merino Wool to Felt, Leather, Cotton Gauze, and Items you will need that the coordinators will bring such as Glue, Brushes, Heat Gun, Hand Press, Scale, etc.

Students will need to bring: 

  • Shoe lasts if you already own them - If not, please call or email susan so we can make sure to get them ordered for you in your size.
  • Spaghetti Mat
  • Rolling Mat
  • Sander (We recommend this one if you do not already own one)
  • 100-120 grams of Olive Oil Soap
  • Gloves
  • Rubber Band 5mm wide
  • Towels
  • Printer Paper for sketching your template
  • Watercolor Pencils or Tailor's Chalk
  • Mosquito Netting
  • Water Sprayer for Felting
  • Box Cutter Knife
  • Large Scissors
  • Large Needles
  • Measuring Tape with Centimeter Markings
  • Black Marker
  • Strong Thread
  • Ruler
  • Awl
  • Large Bowl
  • Wood Washboard, Wood Roller, any tools you normally use for wet felting.
